This chapter reviews the effects acute and chronic alcohol consumption may have on erectile function, ejaculatory function, and men's health. Many studies suggest that chronic consumption of moderate amounts of alcohol prevents erectile dysfunction (ED). The mechanism is likely via upregulation of genes that are protective to the cardiovascular system. On the other hand, chronic use of heavy amounts of alcohol can contribute to ED, likely through downregulation of these same genes. Additionally, patients who chronically drink heavy amounts of alcohol experience hormonal changes that lead to a higher likelihood of premature ejaculation. Alcohol abuse is also associated with hypogonadism. Less research has been done on the acute effects of alcohol than on chronic use. Historically, alcohol was postulated to cause ED, but more recent studies on moderate imbibing provide results ranging from no effect to an increased ability to achieve and maintain erections. |
