Popis: | In the spring of 1984, Archaeological Research Services, Inc. was contracted by the Fort McDowell Mohave-Apache Indian Community to conduct data recovery at historic sites which would be impacted by Phase I of the Fort McDowell Irrigation Betterment Project. The sites are located on the Fort McDowell Indian Reservation, Maricopa County, Arizona. Nine sites were studied. Two of them were canals: the Government Ditch, dating from 1866 to ca 1940, and the Jones Ditch, dating from 1896 to present. Of the seven other sites, three were turn-of-the-century Anglo habitations later occupied by Yavapai, two were Yavapai sites, and two were historic features of mixed Yavapai and Anglo affiliation. Chapter 1 of this report reviews previous research on the reservation, states the research objectives of the present study, and describes the methods and sources of data used to accomplish these objectives. Chapter 2 provides an historical overview of the Fort McDowell Indian Reservation. Chapter 3 presents historical, ethnohistorical, and archaeological data from the nine sites in the project area. Chapter 4 integrates these data relative to project research objectives, and suggests directions for future research on the Fort McDowell Indian Reservation. |
