Popis: Unweathered outcrops of fluvial gravel deposits near Zurich have been investigated in order to obtain information about inhomogeneities of hydraulic parameters. Different geological elements are distinguished and analysed on photographs. The variability of unsaturated flow parameters is studied based on measurements of the porosity and the grain size distribution using the program SOILPROP. A special method is applied in order to estimate the desaturation characteristics of gravel samples. The method is tested with data for undisturbed soil samples. Each geological element shows a stochastic variability which strongly contrasts with that of other elements. The purpose of the study is a geostatistical description of the unsaturated flow parameters. The effects of spatial variability on predominantly vertical unsaturated flow and transport processes are discussed. Unsaturated flow and transport in the gravel deposit is expected to be dominated by the geometrical arrangement of the open framework zones and sand lenses.
