The water is one of the most important factors tha t affect plant's productivity and quality, therefor e, water deficit periods compromises plant development stages resulting in production decreases and losse s. This work aimed to evaluate the permanent wilting point of both sandy and clayey soils often used to tomato production. A pot experiment was carried out in gre enhouse condition at the experimental station of Ag ronomy Department at Federal University of Rondonia, from April to June of 2008. The experimental design was entirely randomized, in a factorial with 2x10+2 wit h three replications. The treatments were arranged with sandy and clayey soils in an interval of ten days of indu ction of permanent wilting point and two controls w ithout plant that only received water in the previous day of the treatments application. Tomato plants were used as plant test. The pots contained 1.5 kg of soil, collected from t he 0 - 20 cm soil depth of both sandy and clayey so ils were weighed using a precision scale, and then placed in to the pots. The soil moisture was measured after 1 0 days by the gravimetric method. After the soil sampling the water was added to the plants aiming the recovery of water plant content to adequate level. The permanent wilt ing point was observed after four and five days of the treatment application for the sandy and clayey soil s respectively; where the sandy soil showed reduced capacity of moisture retention. Tomato plants were able to r ecover the development even after ten days without irrigation. |
