Popis: | Transactions of the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society, 16, 95-109 This chapter seeks to do three things: it introduces an historical source which is oftenoverlooked; it illuminates a Cumbrian parish's experience of the Great War; and it seeksto set this experience within the wider background of the country's relationship with theChurch of England. It explores the reactions of Cumbrian clergy, both to the outbreakof war, and to Archbishop of Canterbury, Randall Davidson's, 'National Mission ofRepentance and Hope' (1916), as seen in the parish magazines of Keswick and, moreextensively, of Caldbeck. The vicar of St John's, Keswick, was an enthusiastic supporterof the National Mission, while Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley encouraged men to enlistby emphasising notions of chivalry. At Caldbeck, however, Canon Simpson eschewedthe rhetoric of both chivalry and the National Mission in favour of practical help for hisparishioners. Alongside his leadership of Caldbeck's war effort, he bound the parish toits combatants by using his parish magazine to follow the progress of Caldbeck recruitsat the Front. |
