Popis: The effect of ovariectomy and hormone replacement therapy on the activities of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), and adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) was studied in the oviduct, uterus, cervix, and vagina of immature female rhesus monkey ( Macaca mulatta ). The SDH, MDH and ATPase activities were demonstrated in intact animals. Ovariectomy depressed MDH activity but had no effect on other enzymes. Estradiol dipropionate (EDP) administered to ovariectomized monkeys inhibited MDH activity further but stimulated SDH and ATPase in all the tissues except the cervix and vagina. Their response to progesterone (P) was more or less similar to that after EDP except for a lesser suppression of MDH. Sequential treatment with EDP and P had similar effects on SDH and ATPase activity to that of EDP or P; in contrast, MDH responded differentially. The study demonstrated the presence of these enzymes on the Krebs cycle and energy metabolism in the genital tissues of the rhesus monkey and their differential response to sex steroids.
