Popis: Summary The exact cause of IBD is unknown, but it commonlyaffects young as well as older people, and its chronic-ity and potential for complications impact greatly onthe lives of those affected. As no single therapy is uni-formly effective, it is important to discuss treatmentsand possible future therapies with patients at the timeof diagnosis. Generally, so-called disease-modifyingdrugs, such as the immunomodulators and the bio-logicals, are being used earlier than hitherto in anattempt to modify the long-term course of the disease. Hospitals may be fortunate enough to have desig-nated IBD clinical nurse specialists for ongoing adviceand support. Resources to aid patient educationshould be provided and include patient informationleaflets and information about IBD support groups(see Resources). References 1. Mimura T, et al .
