Horizontal starch gel electrophoresis was used to examine protein variation in 6 populations of Macrobrachium ohione. Nine proteins and 14 loci were identified. Estimates for proportion of polymorphic loci, mean heterozygosity per locus, and mean heterozygosity per individual ranged from 21.4 to 42.8%, 12.9 to 24.1%, and 12.9 to 24.1%, respectively. Estimates of genetic similarity and genetic distance also were calculated and all populations were essentially genetically similar. The wide range of heterozygosity values between the 6 geographic populations has important implications in brood stock selection and breeding programs where increased heterozygosity in the breeding populations or heterosis in the progeny are being studied. |
