Popis: Fixed phrases may appear to be difficult to translate as they are language and culture specific. The paper addresses the question of translating selected aspects of phrases from the point of view of translator training. The empirical section presents the results of the analysis of the data collected from target texts produced by students of the German studies. The analysis then allows to delineate the areas of difficulty and, consequently, postulate effective training. It has been shown that not all phrases pose problems and, in fact, some of them have proved to be translators’ ‘true friends’. Among them one can find body and animal idioms, parallel imagery structures, phrases derived from ancient Roman or Greek sources, and phrases referring to the Bible or Western European literature. Phrases that actually have been too difficult for the students to translate comprise first name and surname idioms, geographical names, and word play. The so called ‘false friends’ have also been the source of some of the mistakes. In conclusion, it may be said that the above data analysis demonstrates the necessity to teach and reinforce receptive skills in the source language, effective information search and its analysis as well as target text evaluation and correction.
