Popis: The capillary method of rhesus-grouping was described by Chown and Lewis as rapid, economical and reliable even if low-titer serums were used. The present authors reported a small-scale trial, and have since employed it regularly for rhesus-grouping in expectant mothers and recipients of transfusion. Unfortunately some observers (personal communications) have had transfusion disasters attributable to its use, though others have obtained satisfactory results. Krieger and Weiden and Poole and AVilliams have published adverse criticisms. Because we found our results to be reliable we have studied the possible causes of error. We conclude that the method is satisfactory only if the original technic of Chown and Lewis 6 is followed with meticulous care. If minor deviations from their technic are permitted, false negative results may appear; though false positives are extremely rare unless major changes in technic are, adopted. The method is therefore suitable for the rapid or large-scale screening of expectant mothers or recipients of transfusion, but is not satisfactory for the testing of donors unless negative results are confirmed by the tube method.
