Adults with ASD seeking employment are part of an ecological system that involves public policy, societal beliefs about disability, the availability of supports at work, and the attitudes of employers. These are all issues that lie outside the scope of the person’s individual skills and can either help or hinder their quest to gain competitive integrated employment. Thus, interventions to increase employment among adults with ASD must include both individual skill development and community connections. This chapter focuses on the ways adults with ASD can access employment through evidence-based and emerging interventions. In particular, the chapter focuses on the individual characteristics of adults with ASD that may serve as barriers, and it discusses the evidence regarding the use of therapeutic strategies to address these in employment. Finally, a selected review is provided of evidence-based interventions for individuals with ASD who have high support needs and lower support needs. |
