As distributed energy resources (DERs), such as solar photovoltaics (PVs), continue to interconnect and generate power into the distribution system, utilities need to perform resource integration capacity analysis in order to determine the extent of the DER impact into the planning and operation of the system. The acceptable level of DER integration capacity for a given distribution circuit can be determined using the concept of the hosting capacity. In a congested circuit, investments are needed to upgrade the existing infrastructure and enable hosting higher capacities of DERs. As an alternative, active curtailment of intermittent generation resource may allow for higher capacity integration. This paper performs a sensitivity analysis on the solar power data in California provided by NREL for integration studies. The results show that with a limited curtailment of solar generation, the capacity of the distribution circuit can be utilized more efficiently, and system upgrades may be deferred. |
