At the NSLS storage rings capacitive pickups (PUEs) with four circular electrodes are used as beam position monitors. The dependence of the induced signal on the actual beam position for the geometry of the vacuum chamber and electrodes is studied both theoretically and experimentally. Four different methods for solving the Dirichlet problem for the NSLS geometry are presented and compared with each other as well as with the measured data. The first method is based on the separation of variables, the next two on conformal mapping and the last one on modeling with the Poisson program. Two sets of bench measurements of the PUE response as a function of the beam position were performed and the results are shown. The PUE response, in accordance with the calculations, is highly nonlinear except around the center of the vacuum chamber. A noniterative method is presented to calculate the beam position from this nonlinear response. |
