LAST SPRING fifty-three science educators from fourteen mainland states participated in the first experimental seminar cosponsored by the National Association of Biology Teachers and the Hawaii 2000 Outdoor Education Center at Hilo. In eight days we traveled by car from Hilo to a base camp at Ainohou Ranch in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, to Kalopa State Park via the scenic Hamakua coast, to South Point via Kona, and back to Hilo (see fig. 1). We observed the functioning of an active volcano, discovered energy sources in a lava tube, explored tide pool life, walked over the crater of a recently active volcano, studied ocean currents and tsunamis, visited a rain forest and a desert, and gained an appreciation of the history and culture of Hawaii though direct observation. Our adventures have led us to believe that direct experience with the fragile island environment of Hawaii can enhance anyone's interpretation of his own natural environment. |
