This chapter considers the environmental problems posed by the release to atmosphere of sulphur, nitrogen and carbon species. The structure of the atmosphere is briefly described and the key air pollutants are reviewed in terms of sources, concentrations and impacts. Relevant air quality standards and guidelines set by the European Community and the World Health Organisation are presented. Emissions of the major pollutants are described at a range of spatial scales and particular attention is given to the emission profile of the UK as a typical example of emissions from an advanced industrial state. The transport, reaction pathways and deposition of pollutants in the troposphere is discussed with particular reference to the role of photochemistry. |
