Still owing Fox more films, Monroe was compelled to return to her home studio for perhaps her least propitious starring film. Let’s Make Love was a lifeless, pointless backstage musical in which Monroe came alive only when singing and dancing. The script, written in part by an uncredited Arthur Miller, was unfunny and ill focused, and Monroe had virtually no on-screen rapport with costar Yves Montand. (Off-screen was another story.) Director George Cukor, with an enormous roster of fine films to his credit, could do little to give the film any point. Production was additionally hampered by a writers’ strike and by the now-worse-than-ever roster of Monroe indispositions. Even dance director Jack Cole, normally a staunch ally, was upset with her—although her work with him formed the main basis for whatever quality the film would possess. |
