Popis: Previous research shows that psychological perspective-taking improves attitudes towards outgroup members. Perspective-taking induces empathy, increases liking, which in turn decreases prejudiced attitudes (Shih, Wang, Trahan Bucher, & Stotzer, 2009). Some of the classical ways to manipulate empathic perspective taking are to instruct participants to take the perspective of others, normally accompanied by a narrative essay task (Galinsky, 2000), or by taking the perspective of someone in a video (Shih et al., 2009). There are potential problems with this type of manipulations. Participants’ subjective interpretations of these stories, their own ability for perspective taking, and other situational factors, such as motivation and concentration, can act as obscuring factors for the results. Previous research on visuo-spatial perspective-taking has tackled these issues with a new paradigm and has shown that this type of perspective-taking increases sympathy, similarity and trust towards another person (Erle, Ruessmann & Topolinski, 2018; Erle & Topolinski, 2017). Thus indicating similar outcomes as with empathic perspective-taking. However, research on visuo-spatial perspective-taking has tested these effects only for in-group members and using avatar-like characters. In the present study, we want to test what is the effect of visuo-spatial perspective-taking on attitudes towards out-group members. Moreover, we want to investigate whether this effect is moderated by general prejudice and by the motivation to conceal it. To do so, participants will complete the tasks from the VPT paradigm, both egocentrically and from the perspective of the other. At the same time, we will manipulate the ethnicity of the target. Participants will be exposed to all possible combinations in a within-subjects design. Remark: This pre-registration includes information that is relevant for a bachelor thesis. This thesis is part of a more extensive research project that includes other variables and analyses that are not specifically investigated in this thesis.
