A medical imagery database should be complete, accurate, secure, and functionally robust. Database completeness depends on availability of medical imagery in digital format. A PACS should incorporate all medical imagery, including not only standard x-ray, CT, ultrasound, MR, and nuclear medicine, but also anatomic pathology, endoscopy, and retinal and other photography. Imagery should be equivalent to that available on a dedicated modality workstation. For maximum utility, the user (or central controlling system such as the HIS/RIS) must be able to locate groups of imagery by demographic identifiers, image type, or by content. Content information is available from imagery interpretations or potentially from the imagery itself. In our prototype content database, imagery interpretations are sent from the HIS/RIS to a Sun workstation. Our database allows the user to construct easily either simple or Boolean searches using any combination of of demographic, imagery type, or content descriptors. We describe our initial efforts at searching the imagery itself. |
