The Maplnfo GIS software was used to map dengue data and its relationship to the sanitary conditions in the study site of Petaling Jaya Selatan, Selangor, Malaysia. The study utilized dengue data provided by the Petaling Jaya Municipal Health Unit and it was integrated with the Petaling Jaya map to pictorially present information about the affected areas. The software gives a rapid identification of the locations of dengue cases through a graphics display. This multi racial residential area reported 35 cases of dengue over a seven-month study commencing between November 1998 and June 1999. The racial breakdown of patients was 57% Chinese, 20% Indian and 23% Malay among which 54% was female and 46% male. Based on the on-site survey, it was observed that the affected areas have very poor sanitary living conditions. This study concluded that poor sanitary conditions were the most probable cause for the spread of such a disease and the GIS technology has been proven efficient in data collection and presentation of disease incidence for charting immediate corrective and preventive actions. |
