Popis: Seawater desalination is one promising technology that can produce potable water, to support populations with geographically limited access to fresh water. Desalination is already the main source of water production in a number of countries in the middle east, including Saudi Arabia, Israel, UAE, and Kuwait, and has the potential to contribute to solving the water shortage problem in states like California. The main barrier for broad deployment of seawater desalination is the high energy intensity of the technology, which translates into high operation cost. This paper hypothesizes that coordinated operation of power generation and water desalination plants would bring detectable levels of economic savings, which can have a substantial impact on the final cost of fresh water. To evaluate the hypothesis, we first model the desalination process to calculate its energy consumption, considering the process parameters. Then, we integrate the model within a power system operation framework to co-optimize the schedule and output of both power and desalination plants. The day-ahead scheduling problem is implemented as a mixed integer linear program. The simulation results, on IEEE 118-bus system, confirm that the proposed coordinated model will offer significant economic savings while meeting the energy and water demands.
