Popis: We discuss the influence of soliton interactions on information transmission. It is shown that the short-range mutual interaction of neighboring time slots can lead to non-Gaussian tails on the distribution function and a substantial increase in the bit error rate. The long-range interactions via the acoustic effect significantly increase the timing jitter of solitons in communication lines. We calculate the correlation in near-neighbor soliton time shifts due to the acoustic interaction and show that the acoustic effect can cause correlated errors that cannot be corrected using standard, simple error correction codes like the Hamming code. We argue that similar effects will appear in NRZ systems.
