An inset fed comb-shaped implantable microstrip patch antenna is designed for biomedical applications. The antenna is compact in dimension with its volume of 31.46 mm3and operates at triple frequency: Medical Implant Communication System (MICS) band of 402 MHz for data telemetry, 1.227 GHz for wireless power receiver, and Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) band of 2.436 GHz for wake-up signal of implantable medical device (IMD). The antenna consists of Defected Ground structure (DGS) which supports the antenna to resonate at ISM band. To analyze the practical applications, the proposed design incorporates RF chip with the antenna and encapsulated using biocompatible material silicon in 245.06 mm3of total volume. The proposed DGS implantable antenna is placed inside one layer 4 mm skin and provides 23.6%, 12.6% and 11.3% impedance bandwidth at the respective bands with good VSWR value and gain. |
