Popis: Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles capable of converting incident near-infrared (NIR) photons into visible emission have been widely used in light-mediated theranostics due to their advantages of deep-tissue penetration, nonblinking luminescence, high photostability, and excellent biocompatibility. These unique features make them attractive in biosensing, optical imaging, and noninvasive therapy for biomedical applications. In this chapter, we present an overview of recent developments of upconversion nanomaterials for NIR light-mediated theranostics. We give a brief introduction to lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles and discuss their utility as nanoprobes in biological detection, in vivo optical imaging, and biomedical therapy. At the end of the chapter we give a summary on the development and perspectives in this field.
