This project will seek to extend our understanding of the relationship between conspiracy beliefs and the kind of democracy people support. In two previous studies we found that people who believe more in conspiracy theories tend to show less support for direct and more support for representative democracy. Extending this line of research, here we wanted to test how successful direct democracy is in actually reducing conspiracy thinking as compared with representative democracy. Reasoning that the relationship between conspiracy theories and support for different kinds of democracy is explained by increased cynicism and political powerlessness among conspiratorial individuals, we here sought to determine whether people who operate in a direct democratic country vs one with representative democracy might be less cynical and more empowered and thus end up believe less in conspiracy beliefs. |
