Focusing on alternative analyses of South Asian materials, this paper examines several of the assumptions underlying structural semantic analyses of systems of kintype classification. It is argued that inappropriate genealogical concepts must be avoided in the interpretation of such systems and that indigenous concepts of relatedness must be distinguished from kinship terms per se. It is suggested that intraregional comparisons may be used to choose among competing semantic analyses. [South Asia, kintype classification, kinship systems, cultural analysis] |
