The existence of both short pulse, high power lasers that can be used drive material flyers to high velocities, and excellent laser diagnostics for determining flyer velocities as a function of time has made the use of such tools an attractive alternative to conventional means for measuring the high pressure properties of materials under shock loading. It provides an especially attractive means for the study of thin materials such as the poly‐silicon layers used in the surface micromachine fabrication process. In the current study, our previously developed laser deposition physics addition to the Sandia CTH hydrocode is being used to explore the parameter space of material layering and laser pulse characteristics to develop promising experimental configurations for material property studies. For ordinary materials, thicker foils for acceleration are wanted to provide longer dwell time of the shocked state in a target material.
