We studied dating practices, sexual beliefs, emotions, and experiences in 295 black high school girls who volunteered to answer an anonymous 61 item questionnaire. Some of the main differences between 33 girls who admitted to having been pregnant (Pregyes) compared to their remaining, never pregnant (Unpreg) peers were as follows: The Pregyes group far more often judged soap operas and romance novels to epitomize real life, typical dating patterns, and their own dating relationships. The Pregyes group was more concerned with the danger of sexually transmitted diseases, but less with moral principles, as restraints on action. The Pregyes group dated more often and admitted more arousal to sexy films, but was less concerned with the impact of current involvements on their own or a husband's future feelings. The 9th-graders were generally the most sexually precocious or were similar in experience to the 12th-graders. In contrast, the 10th- and 11th-grade groups appeared the least sexually active. |
