Popis: To reduce the contamination and debris generation of a final payload and motor stage separation, a frangible joint assembly was developed. This paper presents the analysis and development efforts utilized to arrive at a structural member which both sustains the high structural loads associated with space launch vehicles, and subsequently separates that structure in a clean manner. The development effort also highlights some of the additional technical difficulties associated with developing a system of this type that functions at low temperatures. Analysis focuses on both traditional structural FEA techniques for verifying load carrying capacity, as well as hydrodynamic modeling to guide development of the ordnance system utilized to sever the structure. Excellent correlation with subscale testing is demonstrated in both cases.
