Lung biopsies taken in the period immediately after cardiopulmonary bypass show characteristic changes of interstitial oedema, swollen endothelial and alveolar cells (types I and II), and aggregation of abnormal leukocytes in relation to the endothelium of the pulmonary capillaries, arterioles and venules1–3. Intracellular damage also occurs with swelling and destruction of mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum in the alveolar cells and a marked depletion of lysosomal bodies in the abnormal leukocytes. |
