In this study, by using ATP/EMTP simulation program, the impacts of overvoltage on L-shape ground grid systems of the high voltage substation equipped with two different ground rod patterns, including mesh-and edge-distributions, were investigated and compared. These two L-shape ground grid patterns were designed according to the IEEE standard 80-2000 to cover the same area size of 324 square meters and then used for simulation by injecting the fault current of 25 kA at different points on ground grids. The overvoltage occurred within these two L-shape ground grid were measured and compared with the calculated grid potential rise (GPR). The results showed that the levels of overvoltage found on mesh-distributed rods were lower than that on edge-distributed rods perhaps due to the possibility of that overvoltage may disperse on mesh-distributed rods more efficiently and resulting in quickly absorption of overvoltage to ground soil. The results from this study can be useful for the future designing of ground grid systems of high voltage substations with lower cost of investment and construction. |
