Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a high-impact transboundary pox disease of cattle and Asian water buffalo caused by a lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV). The disease is categorized on the list of notifiable diseases by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) due to its capability of rapid transboundary spread and to cause substantial cattle production losses. The OIE sets up recommendations for the export and trade of live cattle and their products from affected countries. Within the European Union (EU), notification, disease control, vaccination, cattle movements and trade within and between the EU member states are strictly regulated by different directives and implementing decisions. |
