Popis: An account is given of measurements of the sound absorption and impact-insulation improvement for a range of carpets, underlays, and carpet–underlay combinations. It is shown that carpets, underlays, and woven carpet on underlay behave as simple porous absorbers. Tufted carpet on underlay behaves differently and exhibits a resonant peak in the absorption at 500–l000 Hz. The average absorption coefficient correlates well with the total thickness for all samples. The average impact-insulation improvement of carpets, underlays, and combinations correlates reasonably well with the total thickness and with the maximum force measured during a simulated impact test involving the use of a single hammer containing an accelerometer. Either parameter would serve as an indicator of the impact performance of a carpet or carpet–underlay combination.
