Popis: | This article presents original research from oral history interviews investigating the performances of Austin Ballet Theatre, a regional amateur company, at the Armadillo World Headquarters from 1972 to 1980 in Austin, Texas. The Armadillo was primarily a concert venue and beer hall for psychedelic rock and country music. However, on second Sundays Austin Ballet Theatre presented repertory ballet concerts with great success to large audiences. In interviews, dancers identify their Armadillo performances as a primary site where learning took place. Interviews also reveal how the fun and excitement of monthly performances inspired the dancers to invest deeply in their technique classes and the rehearsal process. Accordingly, this article explores how performances function in dance education: a pedagogy of performing.
