The above paper raises two interesting points. The first concerns the mitigation of sulphide induced pitting by small additions of chlorine. I suggested that this was a possible method of reducing the deleterious effects of sulphide in 1985, and it is very interesting to see the idea being put into practice. One fact which it is important to realise is that most of the sulphide is oxidised to amorphous sulphur. While this is not so corrosive towards copper alloys as sulphide, it can still cause higher corrosion rates than in clean sea water. This is one possible explanation of the higher than normal corrosion measured after injection of chlorine. |
