SummarySprays of 250 ppm aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG), with and without mixtures of 200 ppm GA3, 300 ppm 1, 3-diphenylurea and 10 ppm naphthalene acetic acid (PP 34IB) or 25 ppm GA4+7 and 25 ppm N6-benzylaminopurine, were applied to cv Cox’s Orange Pippin apple trees at full bloom. AVG alone or in combination with the mixtures increased fruit set, but the mixtures alone reduced set. At harvest time there were large increases in the numbers of fruits per tree following the combined sprays, which caused marked reductions in mean fruit weight. Fruit length/diameter ratios were increased by all treatments, most markedly by the combined sprays. Treatments with AVG resulted in small but significant reductions in seed numbers at harvest. |
