Besides gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract include a wide spectrum of heterogeneous benign and malignant lesions. Although rarely encountered, they impose true diagnostic challenge for most practicing pathologists. In this chapter, common mesenchymal lesions are listed according to their frequently occurring sites. A concise discussion of each entity is provided including key histologic features, immunostaining profiles, and molecular characteristics. Diagnostic features are compared and contrasted among the most relevant and important differential diagnoses in multiple tables. Helpful criteria to distinguish benign tumors from their malignant counterparts are also highlighted. |
