This paper will examine an alternative to the suspension program developed to address the growing level of violence and aggression in North York secondary schools. A total of 111 students passed through the program between 1992 and 1995–6, and the development of a solid theoretical and practical orientation appears to have had a demonstrable effect in addressing the needs of violent or potentially violent students. What is unique about the program in educational terms is its short term solution focused approach to dealing with aggressive and violent behavior that would ordinarily be dealt with through long term, more traditional therapeutic and/or legal avenues. |
