The nucleon-nucleon interaction is described over the laboratory scattering energy range 0-350 MeV by a potential used in conjunction with the Schr\"odinger equation. In momentum space the potential is a superposition of Born terms obtained from single exchanges of $\ensuremath{\omega}$, $\ensuremath{\rho}$, $\ensuremath{\pi}$, $\ensuremath{\eta}$, ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{0}$, and ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{1}$ mesons, where the ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{0}$ and ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{1}$ are hypothetical scalar mesons with isotopic spin 0 and 1, respectively. Rather than taking the usual static limit, all terms of order $\frac{{p}^{2}}{{M}^{2}}$ are retained. The inclusion of $S$ waves requires the introduction of a cutoff factor. The meson coupling constants, the masses of the ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{0}$ and ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{1}$, and a cutoff parameter are adjusted to fit the experimentally determined phase parameters. A comparison with experimental phase-shift analysis shows a good qualitative fit, on the average. |
