Of these cancers, 426 (23%) were early gastric cancer, which increased progressively year after year due to advancements in diagnosis. The incidence of mucosal cancer was 199 (46.7%) and that of submucosalcancer was 227 (53.3%). Macroscopically, three-forths of early cancers were of the depressed type, one-forth were of the elevated type, and only seven were of the flat type. Lymph node metastasis significantly increased in association with the depth of tumor invasion (4.5% in mucosal cancers versus 16.3% in submucosal cancers). The five-year survival rate of early gastric cancers was 96.8% in submucosal cancers and 94.8% in submucosal cancers. |
