This entry provides a brief summary of the scope and history of bioethics. It then critically describes the main methods in bioethics, namely principle based, utilitarian, deontological, and feminist as well as communitarian approaches. The implications of these approaches in bioethical problem solving are investigated in special chapters looking at research ethics, ethical issues in beginning and end of life questions, the ‘new’ genetics, the physician–patient relationship, and ethical problems in resource allocation decision making. |
