The 26.5-mile Lower Willamette River (LWR) in Oregon, extending from the Willamette Falls to the Columbia River, is a dynamic system. Modeling the hydrodynamics and sediment transport is an important element of an ongoing remedial investigation/feasibility study (RI/FS) in the portion of the LWR, referred to as the Portland Harbor Superfund site. This paper describes a phased approach to develop a comprehensive hydrodynamic and sediment transport model to assess sediment stability/erodibility in Portland Harbor. Model setup, calibration, and validation are presented. The paper also discusses how well the model results meet the objectives of the Phase 1 modeling effort and how the model performance can be further improved. |
