Popis: The main argument of the book contends that the daily construction of ethnic identities influences the degree to which ethnicity influences vote choice. It brings together the sociological literature on identity construct with the political science literature on identity politics/voting. Chapter 2 argues that individuals come to society with a set of ethnic attributes (which may send only noisy ethnic signals), which others use to infer ethnic identity. When the identity that others assign to individuals conflicts with the identity they have chosen for themselves, their identity is then questioned. This questioning then leads individuals to either construct a weaker or stronger identification with the group. When individuals construct a weaker connection with the group, they should then be less influenced by that identity when voting. The chapter also explores scope conditions of, extensions to, the role of multiple ethnic identities in, and endogeneity issues inherent in the theory.
