Popis: | Strontium and zinc concentrations in human bones from the Point Durham area of the Chatham Islands make it po sible to assess the relative importance of meat and vegetable in the ancient Moriori diet. The strontium values need to be normalised against a local faunal standard to allow meaningful comparison with other prehistoric populations. This study tends to confirm the view that this Moriori group ate few plant foods; seals and marine birds formed the basis of their economy. They ate comparatively few filter-feeding shellfish. These results do not necessarily apply to prehistoric people in other parts ofthe Chatham Islands. |
