Popis: Until 1984, chloroquine was the universally prescribed drug for chemoprophylaxis and treatment of malaria for expatriates coming to Ifakara (Burnier, unpublished information). However, because Plasmodium falciparum strains may be resistant to chloroquine [1], chloroquine is no longer prescribed as the sole prophylaxis and alternative protective measures are needed. Malaria is endemic in Tanzania, which is of great concern to temporary residents [2]. Due to the wide choice of chemoprophylactic drugs currently available and the efficacy of individual protective measures, there is much discussion at any social gathering as to the individual merits of the various protection measures. This also reflects the lack of a consensus among malaria experts.
