Claims of widespread voter and election fraud have produced high levels of distrust in elections among Republicans, undermining the work of election administrators and threatening confidence in U.S. democracy, including in the 2022 midterm elections. To determine how to most effectively counter this threat, we conduct an experiment in the period before the 2022 election in a large nationally representative sample of Americans testing the effects of corrective messages debunking false claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 elections from credible sources (Republican politicians and judges) against the effect of messages prebunking false claims that people are likely to encounter about the 2022 elections in the style used by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and secretaries of state. We then conducted additional experiments in the second and third waves of our panel survey. |
