The seven stories in A Matter of Pride and Other Stories focus on the daily lives and desires of women of color in the urban United States. Each story in this collection deals with how Boricua women confront, analyze, and resolve the paradoxes of their daily lives in ways that affirm their basic humanity. Mohr deftly and often humorously explores the complications and strategies that women devise in transgressing the limits imposed on their lives by others. Her work touches on all of the major themes found in late-twentieth-century Latina fiction, including poverty, domestic violence, internalized racism, class and racial stereotyping, the rise of crime and gentrification in urban communities, competition between women for male attention and affection, the politics of bilingualism, Latina self-esteem, Anglocentric standards of beauty, homosexuality, and homophobia.
