Popis: Channel-plates, with a time resolution of around 150 ps, were used to investigate the “plasma-delay” effect of surface barrier solid state detectors. The “plasma-delay” was measured by comparing the onset of the detector signals, for strongly and weakly ionizing incident particles ( 252 Cf source), with a zero-time reference signal, produced by the secondary electrons emitted from the leading surface of the detector when an incident particle traverses it. Experimental results do not show any actual “plasma-delay” at the very onset of the detector signal within the error bars of our set-up. We conclude by suggesting that secondary electrons from the leading surface of solid state surface barrier detectors be commonly used to provide time reference signals (as described in this experiment) in time of flight measurements.
