Organogenesis involves a series of complex events, and the molecular mechanisms controlling organogenesis are not well understood in plant or animal systems. Apical meristems exert the greatest influence on organogenesis in plant development relative to other meristematic tissues, and are, therefore, important foci in studying plant development. The root apical meristem (primary, lateral and adventitious) is simpler in cellular composition compared to the shoot apical meristem, and therefore may be more amenable to genetic and developmental characterization relative to shoot apical meristems. However, the basic biology of de novo (adventitious) root apical meristem formation is still poorly understood, and will require a concerted effort in the scientific community to dissect the developmental events involved in the formation of this meristem (see the chapter by Barlow and by Haissig and Davis in this volume). |
