Popis: Objective: Although bachelor’s level social workers make up critical frontline workers in the direct service industry that satisfy the needs of vulnerable populations, employers also hire other social science majors (e.g., psychology, sociology, criminal justice) for frontline social work positions. This study aims to examine how this lack of job market recognition of a BSW degree is related to the earnings of bachelor’s social workers, many of whom have non-social work degrees.
Method: Pooling more than 10 years of nationally representative samples of bachelor’s level social workers, this study estimated the effects of the 10 most popular undergraduate majors for social workers on their annual earnings.
Results: The results revealed that holding a BSW degree, relative to holding a non-social work degree, is related to a small yet significant earnings premium of bachelor’s social workers, net of their demographic and employment characteristics as well as geographic and year variations that may have affected their earnings.
Conclusions: The result suggests positive effects of the profession-specific education and training in BSW programs on social workers' earnings. The social work profession may want to devote more attention to promoting BSWs in the labor market.
