Popis: Maps have played important roles in dealing with the sovereignty dispute of the channel islands between the United Kingdom and France, the sovereignty dispute of Preah Vihear Temple between Thailand and Cambodia, and some modern international borderline disputes such as the dispute between Jordan and Israel. The role of maps could be concluded as follows: Territorial maps reflect the scope of jurisdiction of a state’s sovereignty. Military maps even demonstrate a state’s sovereignty. Various maps could be used as evidence in dealing with borderline disputes. When a state publishes its territorial maps and when other states follow these maps, or no states raise any objections against the maps, these conducts should be regarded as acknowledgement and acquiescence in international law. The legal force of maps is equal to treaties and quasi-treaties when borderline maps are acknowledged as the appendices of treaties. It is indicated in majorities of maps, both in China and abroad, that Nansha Islands belong to China, including maps from the dispute-involved states. All the above functions of maps could be applied to disputes on the Nansha Islands and thereby prove that China has indisputable sovereignty over the Nansha Islands.
